“Pure frames”: Croatian experimental cinema and Sunčica Fradelić

We look forward to seeing you at Cinema ARTA on Thursday, 1st of June from 8PM at the “Pure frames” event dedicated to 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑚𝑎! This program presents the recent work of an important exponent of the new Croatian experimental cinema. Sunčica Fradelić, whose award-winning short film 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑊𝑒 𝑊𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒 is a touching cinematic mediation on life’s inevitable changes. Filmmaker, artist and curator, Sunčica Fradelić is a long-time member and manager of the Kino klub Split. That is a historical home for the local avant-garde movement. The Kino klub Split formed part of the network of Yugoslavia’s free state schools. With their own laboratories and projection rooms, where cinema lovers could join and learn to make films. A diverse array of amateurs who made films here were strongly marked by the influence of the poet and architect Ivan Martinac. Who favoured existentialist themes and a meditative approach to filmmaking, seeking purity in frames. For this special event in Cluj, He has selected two short films by two different generations of Kino klub Split filmmakers who have particularly inspired her own work.

A cinematic investigation of abstract rhythmical shapes produced by the camera movement through various objects, figures, and lights found within the surrounding environment.

Early in the dawn, before sunrise, the beach becomes the meeting place of two opposite worlds. Returning from the night life, numerous groups of young people pass by on their way home. At the same time, older people, whose day is just beginning, are slowly coming to the beach.

Briefly depicted fragments from the characters’ lives, through summer and winter, as each of them suffers a loss. A cinematic meditation on inevitable changes.

🎤 The film screenings will be followed by a conversation with the filmmaker Sunčica Fradelić and Ana Grgić, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Theatre and Film, Babes-Bolyai University.
Sunčica Fradelić completed formal education in 2006, earning a MFA degree in Arts, Painting at the Academy of Arts in Split (UMAS). She has been involved in development of the Cine Club Split since 2008. Between 2006 and 2011 she worked as an external associate/assistant at UMAS, Department of Film and Video, on several courses (Short Film and Video, New Media, Performance etc.). In the period 2011 – 2016, Sunčica worked as a principal co-operator of Bela Tarr on development and implementation of the film.factory programme in Sarajevo, as programme coordinator for DLA and MA degrees and office manager of the film.factory project office.

While attending the film.factory doctoral degree studies, she established cooperation with renowned film directors, actors, producers, critics and film professionals. Her work experience covers numerous amateur and professional productions, coproductions and projects, workshops and educational programs, with job positions ranging from production supervisor, producer and executive producer to publishing, editorial, mentoring, curating and jury tasks. She has been an independent auteur since 2004 and her works have been shown at exhibitions and festivals both at national and international level. She was vice-president of the Youth Centre Platform in Split 2017 – 2021. She was elected vice-president of the Croatian Film Association in 2021. In 2022, she started her own production studio 2 White Elephants. Her latest short film While We Were Here (2022) was selected for the international competition at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and awarded the FeKK Bal at the FeKK Ljubljana Short Film Festival in 2022, and was included to the list of important achievements at Alternative Film/Video festival in Belgrade.
